Bailing Out Mama

Last year in honor of Mother’s Day, we asked you to support Mama’s Bail Out Day, an initiative to post bail for incarcerated black women held in pretrial detention. Now called National Black Mama’s Bail Out Day, this Mother’s Day initiative has become an annual one, and we’ll be supporting it annually at MCW as well. 

The money bail system is broken, serving as a debtor’s prison for individuals accused of low-level offenses like traffic violations and loitering. This is something New JerseyAlaskaAtlanta, and Philadelphia lawmakers have realized. In participating in National Black Mama’s Bail Out Day, you’re not only helping mothers, you’re participating in the growing movement to end money bail.

A Better Farm Bill

Every 5 years or so, Congress reauthorizes the Farm Bill: a massive piece of legislation that shapes what we eat, how our food grows, and how we conserve land. Republicans on the House Agriculture Committee just passed a draft of the new Farm Bill—and it’s terrible. It guts the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, also known as food stamps), and it totally eliminates the Conservation Stewardship Program, an incredibly important agricultural policy that helps farmers conserve their land.
