Last year in honor of Mother’s Day, we asked you to support Mama’s Bail Out Day, an initiative to post bail for incarcerated black women held in pretrial detention. Now called National Black Mama’s Bail Out Day, this Mother’s Day initiative has become an annual one, and we’ll be supporting it annually at MCW as well.
The money bail system is broken, serving as a debtor’s prison for individuals accused of low-level offenses like traffic violations and loitering. This is something New Jersey, Alaska, Atlanta, and Philadelphia lawmakers have realized. In participating in National Black Mama’s Bail Out Day, you’re not only helping mothers, you’re participating in the growing movement to end money bail.
