Shouldn’t creeping authoritarianism actually creep?
Here at MCW, we’ve been debating the use of words like “fascism” and “authoritarianism” to describe actions of our 45th president.
We believe we are witnessing creeping authoritarianism as the new administration quells public dissent by propagating bald-faced lies while centralizing authority with a handful of advisers. Authoritarianism works by restricting what you can do, but it also works by trying to restrict what you think about. Lies are “alternative facts,” and down is up. It drains your mental energy because you spend more time thinking about how to challenge or circumvent authority. To do this, we need our civic activism muscles, and a bit of imagination.
